Some video poker machines can pay more than they take.
That is not a slogan. It is what happens when a progressive royal gets high enough that the extra jackpot outweighs the house edge built into the pay table.
How a progressive actually works
The casino does not print a 100%+ game on day one. The base schedule still has an edge — same as any other Jacks or Better or Deuces machine.
A slice of what earlier players fed the game goes onto the meter. Those credits are gone for them. They are sitting on the glass for you.
As the royal (or the posted jackpot) climbs, expected return climbs with it. Past a break-even point, perfect play on that exact schedule is a positive-EV game: the math says you are supposed to make money over a long enough stretch, not donate it.
That is the whole hunt. Not a system. Not a “hot machine.” A number on the meter versus a number on the pay table.
Most people never run that number. They see a big royal, play hunches, and turn a good meter into a bad session.
